This car is fast!!!!! |
It's the original Pony Car. The 1965 Mustang! Steve McQueen's chase Car in the movie Bullett, (although that was the fastback model and the soundtrack of the movie sounds crap). |
Mine has the 289cc "High Performance" (4.7 litres) small block V8. That puts out 271 brake horse into a limited slip differential and it red lines at 6000 RPM, not bad for a 32 year old V8! |
The car has been completely striped of internal trim and weight. It has Stage Rally Homologation papers testifying to its period authenticity. It has bucket seats, a full roll cage, helmet intercoms and 5 point harnesses. It also has a plumbed in fire extinguisher and emergency battery cutout switches. The fuel tank is foam filled to stop the fuel sloshing around. The suspension has been professionally sorted. It corners flat and at speed as you can see from the picture at Caerwent. I have entered this car in the London to Cape Town Rally that runs in October 1998. The provisional route is UK, channel tunnel, France, Belgium (with a lap of the Spa circuit), Germany (with a lap of the original Nurburgring circuit), Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Eastern Cerbia, Bulgaria and Turkey. That little bit is 3,650 kms and we do that in 5 days. After Istanbul we cross the rest of Turkey then through Syria (Damascus and Petra) and Jordan on to Aqaba. Next is Israel (Eliat), the Sinia peninsula, under the Suez Canal, Egypt (Cairo and the pyramids), Sudan (provided they are not having a war at the time), across Ethiopia to Addis Ababa. From there its the Blue Nile gorge, Great Rift Valley, Dida Galgahu Desert, Nairobi, Mt Kenya, Masai Mara, Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro and Dar-es-Salam by the Indian Ocean. Nearly there now, its Malawi, Zambia and into Zimbabwe by the Victoria Falls Bridge. Then Namibia and into South Africa across the Kalahari Desert through Cape Province and into Cape Town. Thats 12,000 miles in 38 days driving plus 3 rest days, what a route! |
Taken on the 1996 Boarder Classic Historic Road Rally. We came 31st out of a field of 42. Not a good result, we got very lost on the night navigation section. One highlight though was that we had breakfast with Sir David Steel. He competed on the Rally driving his Riley 1.5. He came 28th, so I recon he got lost as well. |
Taken on the 1996 Caerwent Stages. This Stage Rally is held completely inside the old Army base in South Wales near Cardiff. |
