Rally of the Tests

Six Rally of the Tests so far.

The first two in 2002 and 2003 were with John Bateson in his MGA. John is quick on the tests and we had some close calls on wet grass, just missing a large tree on one occasion. We survived and finished 6th and 10th.

The next two, 2004 and 2005, were with Ian Williamson where we rallied his very famous 1935 MG PB Cream Cracker  team car originally campaigned by Maurice Toulman. The car then passed to Austin May who wrote the famous trials book Wheelspin based on his experiences competing in this car.

Since then it has had a continuous competition history which Ian and I added to in recent years. We have used it on many trials culminating in Ian gaining his “Tripple” by cleaning all the hills on the Exeter, Lands End and Edinburgh trials in the same year. I had the pleasure of  being his passenger and bouncer on these and many other trials events. On the Rally of the Test we came 7th and then 28th, not bad against some very competitive competition. We also entered the car twice into LeJog and gained a Silver medal in  2003.

In 2006, I was with Ian Swift in his Mini Cooper S. A great ride and we managed 16th.

The last one so far was in 2009 where I joined David Cook in his Morgan plus 4. My main memory of that event was the appalling weather. It rained constantly and at one point we were stuck in a flooded narrow lane sitting in water that flowed from side to side in the car when we opened the doors. With no roof, my main problem was the OS maps dissolving under the potty magnifier, leaving me with no route to follow in the paper mush on my lap.
